Leighton Meester has designed a jumpsuit for sustainable fashionable brand Christy Dawn.

The Gossip Girl actress has collaborated with a fashion company for the first time to create The Leighton Jumper, a sleeveless, wide-leg jumpsuit made entirely of upcycled fabric and sewn at the label's base in Los Angeles. The jumpsuit features a bow detail on the neckline and comes in three colour options - pale pink, light blue, and black with a white star pattern.

Leighton's original inspiration was the character of Miss Honey from 1996 children's film Matilda, and she worked on the piece with the Christy Dawn team for the past six months with the practicalities of motherhood in mind.

"Very early on, I said that I was interested in making a jumper, even though (Christy) is really well known for her dresses," she said to People. "And while I totally love dresses, jumpers are much more practical for me. They kind of translate from day to night, and I can wear them having a child. They're my go-to, really."

The 33-year-old, who shares three-year-old daughter Arlo with The O.C.'s Adam Brody, explained that she wanted the jumpsuit to be versatile enough to be able to wear to the playground with her child as well as a dinner date.

"It's really comfortable and just makes me feel put together - that's what I want as a mom, to be able to throw something on and feel put together," the star stated.

Leighton also noted that the collaboration came about because she had grown more aware of sustainability.

"In the last five years or so, I really started becoming more conscious and aware of what I'm consuming whether it be what I am watching, eating, wearing or what I'm shopping for," she added.

All proceeds from the jumpsuit will benefit the Downtown Women's Center in Los Angeles, an organisation which helps empower women who are struggling with homelessness.
