'Legend' Trailer: Tom Hardy Plays Twin Mobsters in the Period Thriller

Good news for serious Tom Hardy fans: You’ll be getting a double dose of him in the upcoming British mobster flick, Legend. Hardy, who’s about to go on a shoot-about in Mad Max: Fury Road on May 15, will portray twin brothers Reginald and Ronald Kray in the film from director Brian Helgeland (42).

The first U.K. teaser above is light on dialogue and plot but heavy on mayhem, establishing the Krays as hard-bitten gangsters who won’t hesitate to punish anyone who gets in the way as they seize control of London. Fittingly, it’s all set to the nostalgic sounds of Roy Orbison’s “Running Scared.” In addition to two Hardys, Legend also stars Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) and Taron Egerton, who broke out this year as the face of February’s Kingsman: The Secret Service.

The real-life Kray brothers did indeed rule the city, becoming the very famous faces of organized crime in London’s East End during much of the 1950s and '60s until their arrest in 1968. Cinephiles will recall that this isn’t the first time the notorious siblings have gotten the big-screen treatment. In the 1990 U.K.-produced drama The Krays, they were played by real-life bros (and Spandau Ballet musicians) Gary and Martin Kemp.

Between Legend and the equally impressive-looking trailer for Johnny Depp’s Whitey Bulger bio Black Mass, it’s looking like a good year for gangster flicks. While Legend doesn’t yet have a U.S. release date, it will hit theaters in the U.K. on Sept. 11.
