Year in Review 2022: Lawrence Wong is Yahoo readers' most-searched male Singapore celebrity, again
Malaysian-born actor Lawrence Wong has once again topped the list of male local celebrities most searched for by Yahoo Singapore readers.
Wong, who was also the most searched Singapore male celebrity in 2021, had fewer on screen appearances in 2022, but that didn't stop readers from wanting to find out more about him, according to insights from Yahoo Search.
The actor, who won the hearts of the masses with his captivating performance in the 2018 Chinese period drama Story of the Yanxi Palace 延禧攻略, kept a busy 2022, with numerous partnerships and appearances with brands such as Skechers.
Just behind Wong was former actor Ix Shen. While he hasn't seen an on-screen role since 2011, Shen's involvement in the early days of the Russia-Ukraine conflict saw readers searching for news about him online.
Shen was based in Kyiv in the earlier part of the war, with his wife, Natalia, who is Ukrainian. Though they later left the country for Krakow in Poland, Shen has been keeping up with volunteer work to help those caught in the conflict, returning to the country several times and updating his followers on Instagram on the situation.
Third on the list was Singapore singer-songwriter JJ Lin, whose recent Taiwan concert saw a surprise visit from fellow Mandopop star Jay Chou. He also performed earlier in November at the National Stadium to sold-out crowds, as restrictions were lifted and big events returned to Singapore.
JJ's esports team, Team SMG, however, didn't have that great a year after they missed out on the chance to qualify for The International 11 because they failed to register players in time.
Rounding out the top five were Singapore-based Malaysian actor Zhang Zetong, who had a leading role in You Can Be An Angel 4, and one of the remaining 8 Dukes of Caldecott Hill, Desmond Tan, who started 2022 a married man after tying the knot with his university sweetheart late in 2021.
2022 also marked the first year a YouTuber appeared on the most searched male celebrities list, with JianHao Tan claiming the 7th spot.
Meanwhile, Aloysius Pang, who tragically died in 2019, continued to be on Yahoo Singapore readers' minds, appearing at number 8.
