Lana Condor and her team spent hours picking her character's outfits for the To All the Boys I've Loved Before sequel because they knew fans would copy her wardrobe.
The actress found fame playing Lara Jean Covey in Netflix's 2018 teen romance drama, also starring Noah Centineo as Peter Kavinsky, with fans becoming so obsessed with the lead character that they would emulate her costumes.
While preparing to reprise the character in the sequel, To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, Condor and the movie's style gurus spent hours in fittings to get every look just right because they were mindful of the fact that teenagers would go and buy the pieces Lara Jean wore onscreen.
"We realised that girls went out and bought the same outfits Lara Jean wore. So that's a responsibility for us, to create beautiful things that are also accessible to the masses. I was in fittings every single day, for hours," the 22-year-old recalled to Vogue.
In the sequel, one of the standout pieces of Lara Jean's wardrobe is the tiered seafoam green J. Mendel gown the character wears to a ball, during which she descends a staircase and has a Cinderella moment.
The X-Men: Apocalypse star revealed the team went through so many dresses because they were determined to find the perfect one for her and that scene.
"We tried so many dresses, because you don't see a lot of Asian American women getting a Cinderella moment," she shared.
To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You is streaming on Netflix now.
