Lady Gaga, a fierce LGBT ally, political activist, feminist, and friend to all her fans, is now standing up for herself.

After being body-shamed for having a nonexistent “pot belly” during her Super Bowl halftime performance, the singer has responded in a lengthy and thoughtful Instagram post.

“I heard my body is a topic of conversation so I wanted to say, I’m proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too. No matter who you are or what you do,” she wrote. “I could give you a million reasons why you don’t need to cater to anyone or anything to succeed. Be you, and be relentlessly you. That’s the stuff of champions. thank you so much everyone for supporting me. I love you guys. Xoxo, gaga.”

While Gaga, who will be performing at the Grammys on Sunday with Metallica, was certainly a victim of negative body talk, supporters defended her in droves on social media.

Ashley Legg, a popular fitness blogger, shared on Facebook that Gaga’s harassment “is an example of why many people are insecure about the way they look, why physical standards are set so high and why humans experience disorders like anorexia or bulimia. THIS IS NOT OK.” She continued, “People need to stop criticizing others because of their bodies. We are not objects. We are humans. We are flawed and our flaws our beautiful.”

“The rest of us think Lady Gaga is an inspirational, beautiful rockstar with an awesome body,” Erin Thomas, a news anchor in Savannah, Ga., said. “Social media has gotten out of control when it comes to fat shaming, and still, some wonder why so many people in America have problems with their body image. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

Others have been inspired by Gaga to share their own stomachs.

When Gaga was similarly attacked in the past, she used the experience to help others then as well by launching a body revolution on her website.
