Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell, and a Baby — Must Be a Brandon Maxwell Front Row

When you get down to it, good music, an iconic New York restaurant as the setting, a few celebrities thrown in, and some pretty glamorous clothes are really all you need for a great show. And at his presentation last night for New York Fashion Week, Brandon Maxwell gave us exactly that.

The Designer: Brandon Maxwell started his label a little over a year ago, and since then he has dressed Naomi Campbell and Karlie Kloss, and of course we all know he is best friend and stylist to Lady Gaga. His clothes are glamorous and red-carpet-worthy, and his woman is definitely not one to catch the train or pound the pavement for a cab. Well-manicured, well-tailored, confident, and fun is what one expects from Maxwell.

The Front Row: Seen for the first time this week was Lady Gaga, looking like a proud mama, and of course, wearing custom Brandon Maxwell. Naomi Campbell was there too, in a white silk custom Brandon Maxwell dress, and arriving with her fellow Empire colleague Jussie Smollett. The best front row sighting, though, goes to famed photographer Steven Klein, who brought his baby to the show and gave him (might be a her, one is not too sure) a bottle when the show started — front row sure is young these days!

Model Moment: Models glided down the runway and occasionally broke out into dance — because when good music is blasting, how can you not shake it up a little? Model Adwoa Aboah was our favorite, as she shimmied down confidently whilst holding a straight focus.

#WantItNow: This collection was luxurious with crepe black satin and silk organza worked into pleats and folds. While there were many #WantItNow moments, to me a beautiful silk ivory suit on a woman is the ultimate statement of powerful luxury.

The Scene: The show was held at the iconic Russian Tea Room in midtown Manhattan in a salon room. Rather than ladies who lunch, editors who were hungry and hot filled up the space!

The Playlist: With a setting like the Russian Tea Room, you expect to hear a smooth soundtrack, perhaps some jazz or classical music? But when the show started, Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” blasted out and was followed by Brian Eno’s “Baby’s on Fire,” Gloria Gaynor’s “I Am What I Am,” and Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman,” a mix that had all the editors wishing they were in the ’80s, dancing to these songs and eating caviar!

Future Red-Carpet Fave: There were plenty to choose from in this collection! A silk bandeau crop top with tailored pants on the right body would be a dream.

This bra top with a one-strap dress is best-dressed-list-worthy.

The Takeaway: A fashion show does not need a mega-size venue, fun gimmicks, or any Jenners, Hadids, or Kardashians to make it a great show! Good music and great clothes should do it just nicely, and Maxwell delivered.
