Kylo Ren’s Star Wars 7 Lightsaber Explained

It’s one of the most controversial elements of ‘Star Wars 7’… and now it seems we have an official explanation for Kylo Ren’s lightsaber.

Appearing on display at Disneyland’s ‘Star Wars Launch Bay’ exhibit, a replica of Kylo Ren’s divisive lightsaber gives us a bit more insight into the new blade.

“Kylo Ren’s unusual lightsaber is an ancient design,” reads the plaque (via Collider). “Although the one he carries is recently constructed. The crossguard blades, or quillions, are raw power vented from the primary central blade.”

The notion that the crossguard lightsaber is ‘an ancient design’ is definitely something we hadn’t considered before. After all, many fans felt that the flamboyant design was the result of being put together by a Dark Side user who hadn’t really understood how the energy blade really works.

But maybe that’s still the case…

It’s clear from the clips we see in the numerous ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ trailers that there’s something very different about this lightsaber blade. The raw energy fluxing from the hilt seems unstable… and perhaps that’s because it was built without the aid of a Sith master.

It’s long been thought that Kylo likely cobbled the lightsaber together on his own, scrounging parts where he could to produce a blade which lacks the finesse of one crafted by a true Jedi or Sith.

And this could still be why Kylo’s lightsaber fluxes in such an erratic and powerful way.

But it seems this now-iconic design is of ancient origin.

How that plays into ‘The Force Awakens’ and the Knights of Ren remains to be seen. But it sounds as though Kylo’s lightsaber design might even predate the original lightsabers.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 17 December 2015.
