South Korean singer/songwriter Hwang Chi-yeul gave more than 3,500 fans a night to remember at the Singapore Expo during his mini concert on Sunday (28 May).

Having worked several part-time jobs during his earlier years to fulfil his dream of becoming a singer, Hwang repaid his fans’ support by treating them to a number of hits, including “Bang Bang Bang” and “Honey”, at the concert managed by Shining Entertainment.

Hwang made his official debut in the South Korean music scene in 2007, but faded from it a year later after his previous management company closed because of financial difficulties.

The 34-year-old admitted that friends and fans – “people I want to protect” – were his main motivation during the difficult years when he was out of the scene and had “lost his dream”.

Hwang Chi-yeul’s second chance

His appearance on K-variety show “I Can See Your Voice” in 2015 was his second chance, which Hwang made the most of, subsequently being invited to participate in China’s “I Am A Singer” TV programme.

The resurgent star has since appeared on many shows, both in South Korea and in China. Hwang said he wanted to do all forms of TV shows, but worried that the language barrier would be a problem.

Still, he made an effort to speak some Mandarin to the press and the fans at his concert, some of whom had flown in from China and the United States to see him perform.

“My Mandarin is improving bit by bit,” Hwang said, adding that he was looking forward to the next time he was in Singapore so he could show fans how much he had improved.

He also said that he would not stop himself from thinking about having a concert anywhere, having previously performed in California and Sydney.

Hwang, who has a track for Korean drama “Emperor: Owner of the Mask”, said it was an “honour” to be releasing his first album in 10 years, and would also go on a concert tour.

“Through this opportunity, I hope to give precious memories to my fans,” Hwang said.
