From Cosmopolitan

You know when you’re just chilling, enjoying life, and then you wonder if you left your flat iron on at home? It’s pretty much the worst feeling in the world. Oh, unless, of course, you count the feeling of being a tiny li’l teen in the ’80s who’s just going about your normal day until you realize you might have accidentally left a portal to a horrifying, parallel universe open. That really sucks. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, it’s probably because you haven’t taken a look at Stranger Things season 3 yet. It’s definitely going to be the most terrifying season, and I can’t wait. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Season 3 will premiere July 4.

According to the trailer, Stranger Things season 3 will be available to stream this summer. This already sounds like the perfect excuse to bail on Fourth of July plans in advance.

Speaking of the trailer...it’s wild.

Netflix has finally released the season 3 trailer and there is SO much going on. The kids preteens are here to remind you that they’re actually “not kids anymore,” as you can obviously tell by their trip to a MALL!

Also...let’s just take a moment to appreciate Billy, aka your fave mullet bae Dacre Montgomery, in this pool scene.

Oh, and Steve in whatever this uniform is.

Oh, wait. There’s one more trailer...and it’s way spookier.

Don’t say I didn’t warn ya! If you thought Billy was scary as a regular dude, wait until you see what happens when he gets taken over by an evil mystical creature. (I...think that’s what’s going on here?)

Unlike previous seasons, season 3 will take place in the summer.

As executive producer Shawn Levy revealed at PaleyFest in March 2018, season 3 will take place one year after the events of season 2, placing Eleven, Mike, and friends in the summer of 1985. Things that were popular that summer: “Heaven” by Bryan Adams, “Shout” by Tears for Fears, “Sussudio” by Phil Collins, and Back to the Future (see item number 10). Nintendo was also released that October, which only makes me weep for Bob.

“Summer is in full swing,” Ross Duffer tells Entertainment Weekly. “With no school and no homework, our kids are having the time of their lives, swimming at the local pool and shopping at a fancy new mega mall called Starcourt. But beneath the surface, evil is lurking in Hawkins-and it’s coming for them all.”

The Youngs you’ve been shipping are still together.

For now. According to Levy, “Mike and Eleven are going strong, so that’s a relationship that continues, and same with Mad Max and Lucas.” But keep in mind that they’re still 13-, 14-year-old kids. “So what does romance mean at that stage of life? It can never be simple and stable relationships, and there’s fun to that instability,” Levy says.

But there's one character who is not feeling the love. “Now that Eleven is no longer a secret, Mike and Eleven’s romance is in full swing-to the growing irritation of an overprotective Hopper,” Ross tells EW.

“Hopper is panicked about Eleven’s relationship with Mike," adds Matt. "How does he control the romantic whims of a teenage daughter?"

As for Dustin... “When we meet Dustin this year, he has just returned from science camp-and he may or may not have a brand-new girlfriend,” says Matt Duffer.

Aside from romance, a new frienship may spark between Eleven and Max. “Max’s life takes a surprising turn when Eleven finally opens up to her-and a new friendship is born,” says Ross Duffer.

The older Youngs you ship may be headed for trouble.

“Jonathan and Nancy have a summer internship at the local paper,” Matt says. “Working together strains their relationship-are they really meant to be together?”

Expect more Steve. And more important, “Dad Steve.”

Again, from Levy at PaleyFest: “I don’t want to say much more, but I literally feel that we were walking along and we stumbled onto a gold mine with Dad Steve,” Levy said. Does this mean we’ll actually see him get busy with a bottle of Fabergé Organics? (Four pumps, remember.)

Things are not looking good for Billy....

“Billy is now a popular lifeguard at the Hawkins Pool, but he will soon find himself pulled into a never-ending nightmare,” Matt Duffer says. “This season is a major one for Billy-he really takes center stage this year, and we can’t wait for people to see Dacre’s performance.”

One main character will definitely die.

Gaten, who plays Dustin, was pretty straight forward when Vanity Fair asked him if any main characters would die in season 3. "Yes," he said during his lie detector test...and no lie was detected.

WHO THOUGH?

Erica Sinclair, roast queen and little sister of Lucas, will be promoted to a recurring cast member.

In March 2018, Netflix announced actress Priah Ferguson’s promotion along with details of what to expect from her character in season 3. Get ready for Erica, more grade-A roasts, and her “army of friends,” who will all be part of a mission to save Hawkins from another dangerous threat.

Kali, Eleven’s “sister,” will probably be back.

Kali was last seen on “The Lost Sister” (season 2, episode 7) making a run with her crew as Eleven headed back to Hawkins to save her friends. Regardless of your feelings about the character, Kali’s story line seemed unfinished, especially since she opened season 2. In November 2017, Matt Duffer revealed during Vulture Fest LA that it felt “weird” to leave her story line out of season 3. “I would say chances are very high she comes back.”

Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke’s daughter will play a new character.

Maya Thurman Hawke, who just made her TV debut playing Jo March in the 2017 BBC adaptation of Little Women, will play a character named Robin on Stranger Things season 3, according to Variety. Robin is “bored with her mundane day job” and “seeks excitement in her life,” leading her to get “more than she bargained for when she uncovers a dark secret in Hawkins.” In its official announcement, Netflix added that Robin is an “alternative girl.”

Matt Duffer has just shed a little more light on the new mystery girl. “Robin is a high school band nerd who works with Steve at the mall’s cheesy ice cream shop,” he tells EW.” This is definitely not the type of girl Steve would normally ever spend time with, but now, well, he has no choice.”

The Shadow Monster is not going anywhere.

If you finished season 2, you know that the Shadow Monster is an uninvited guest at the Snow Ball. As Levy tells Variety, the monster “is still lurking out there in the Upside Down” and is “determined to find a way to achieve his goals.” The Demodogs, however, will probably sit this one out. “The dogs didn’t get it done in season 2, so he’s going to have some new strategies.”

If Stranger Things 2 was dark, the third season will be creepy.

“Legitimately creepy,” to be exact. According to Levy, who spoke to Entertainment Weekly at PaleyFest. “It’s very much the Stranger Things I think people know and love. It’s big and spooky. Season 3 has legitimately creepy moments and events, but it’s incredibly warm and character-based because at the end of the day, I think that’s what people love most about Stranger Things.”

Stranger Things 3 will draw from Back to the Future, creators announced in March 2018.

If you’re not familiar with the sci-fi classic starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, watch the trailer, then immediately make plans to watch the film this weekend. In the movie, teenager Marty McFly (Fox) is sent back to 1955 through a time machine built from a DeLorean car and meets his parents in high school. On top of it all, he becomes his mom’s love interest. Marty’s friend Doc Brown (Lloyd) helps him along the way as the two try to make it back to 1985. The film spawned two sequels, Part II and Part III.

The guy from Princess Bride will guest star.

In April 2018, Netflix announced that Cary Elwes will play Mayor Kline, a “handsome, slick, and sleazy…classic ’80s politician.” Jake Busey, son of Gary, who was most recently on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Tony Caine, will also guest-star as a journalist for The Hawkins Post. He’ll have a “sick sense of humor,” according to Netflix. FYI, The Princess Bride came out in 1987, two years after when season 3 takes place. Unless there’s a time jump of some sort, I wouldn’t put too much hope in a Westley reference.

Production officially started in late April.

To celebrate the first day of filming, Netflix released this behind-the-scenes video featuring the season 3 cast.

There’s a new mall in Hawkins.

It’s called the Starcourt Mall, and both Steve and Robin (Maya Hawke) work there as ice cream scoopers at Scoops Ahoy. On July 16, Netflix released the first teaser for season 3 in the form of a promo for Starcourt.

Following Stranger Things tradition, we now know the titles for the season 3 episodes.

On December 9, Netflix unveiled the episode titles for Stranger Things 3.

The titles are:

  • “Suzie, Do You Copy?”

  • “The Mall Rats”

  • “The Case of the Missing Lifeguard”

  • “The Sauna Test”

  • “The Source”

  • “The Birthday”

  • “The Bite”

  • “The Battle of Starcourt”

A few questions: Who’s Suzie? Who’s the missing lifeguard? Does Will celebrate a birthday or is it really about the Shadow Monster? And what kind of battle should we be expecting at Starcourt, aka the mall where Steve works?

This post will be updated as more season 3 information is revealed.
