Kingsman: The Golden Circle crazier than the first film, says Jane Goldman

‘Kingsman: the Secret Service’ was one of the most off-the-wall action movies of recent years – and if screenwriter Jane Goldman is on the level, things will only get more deranged.

Speaking to Collider, Goldman – a frequent collaborator of ‘Kingsman’ director Matthew Vaughn - says the upcoming ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ is “more crazy than the first one, if such a thing is possible.”

The first film was indeed pretty crazy. 2015’s ‘Kingsman’ cast Colin Firth against type as a gentleman super-spy and man of action who takes young hoodie Taron Egerton under his wing as a new recruit.

A deliberate reaction against the more grounded spy movies of recent years (Bourne, Craig-era Bond), it was all ridiculous gadgets, implausible schemes, and at times surprisingly full-on violence – the church bloodbath scene being a notable highlight.

While Goldman hints that ‘The Golden Circle’ might not go to such extremes as its predecessor, she seems confident fans will be pleased.

“I think that people who enjoyed the first one will not be disappointed [in the action sequences].

“It’s not about trying to do something more shocking or more ‘out there,’ it’s about hopefully bringing that freshness and surprise to action scenes, where they don’t go in the direction you think they’re going to go in.”

‘The Golden Circle’ is Goldman’s fifth collaboration with Matthew Vaughn, the screenwriter/producer having previously worked with the director on ‘Stardust,’ ‘Kick-Ass,’ ‘X-Men: First Class,’ and the original ‘Kingsman.’

‘The Golden Circle’ will see Egerton and Mark Strong (essentially Kingsman’s Q) cross the pond to team up with their US counterparts Statesman. Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry and Channing Tatum will all appear – and it is known that Firth will also be back in some capacity (a surprise, given his character’s fate in the first film).

Goldman also says the sequel is “very fortunate” to have Julianne Moore in the role of central antagonist Poppy, who Goldman calls “incredible” and “a great villain.”

Currently in post-production, ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ is set to open on 16 June 2017.
