Kiki Ding laments about supplement plasticizer scandal

19 Jun – Taiwanese actress Kiki Ding admitted that she was as surprised as everybody else about the amount of DEHP plasticizer used in a supplement that she has been taking since her pregnancy.

As reported on Epoch Times, the actress recently took to social media to express her thoughts about the recent claims, saying that she has already been consuming a famous brand's algal oil product before it was revealed that it has a plasticizer content of 26.55ppm - which is 5ppm more than the suggested standard of the Department of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy.

Kiki, who is currently in the final trimester of her first pregnancy, wrote on Facebook that she was heartbroken after hearing the news.

"I had already eaten a can of algal oil capsules [from the reported brand] and I was extremely saddened by the news. I was worried about the mercury content in fish oil supplements, which is why I opted for the algal oil. I didn't expect to be consuming plasticizers instead," wrote the actress.

However, Kiki also shared a paediatrician's opinion, that plasticizers can be fast excreted from urine, and that anybody who has consumed it in the past can just forget about it and instead focus on changing their eating habit and lifestyle instead.

"I think this issue should be strictly managed by relevant departments of the government. If the production is not strictly controlled, people would even have doubts about natural food," she added.
