Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter delivered an uplifting video message to graduating students at the high school featured in the Bill & Ted franchise.

The actors — who are due to reprise their roles in Bill and Ted Face the Music, coronavirus pending — appeared in a special video as part of the online graduation ceremony held by San Dimas High School in California.

The duo recounted their characters’ “be excellent to each other” catchphrase as they congratulated the graduates.

"We know it's a tough time right now and that you're having to do this virtual graduation,” said Winter. “We want to wish you the best of luck moving forward."

Reeves added: "Congratulations to the graduating class of 2020. Well done."

The high school has served as a location for all of the Bill and Ted movies, with the characters attending the school in the first two films and scenes being shot there for the belated threequel.

Bill & Ted Face the Music sees the now middle-aged Wyld Stallyns warned by a visitor from the future that they need to write a song in order to save the universe.

As well as Reeves and Winter, the movie sees William Sadler reprise his role as the Grim Reaper from 1991’s Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.

New additions to the cast include Samara Weaving, Jillian Bell and Brigette Lundy-Paine.

The movie will bring to an end the long wait for fans who have been keen to see a return to the Bill & Ted franchise for decades, particularly given the resurgence in Reeves’ popularity.

Reeves is currently at the heart of several franchises, with John Wick ongoing and a return to The Matrix midway through filming when the coronavirus pandemic hit earlier this year.

Bill & Ted Face the Music is currently set for release on 21 August.
