Katherine Waterston has landed the lead role in Ridley Scott’s forthcoming ‘Prometheus’ sequel 'Alien: Covenant’.

The 'Inherent Vice’ star will play opposite Michael Fassbender, who will be reprising his role as the android David.

Filming on the movie begins in Australia in the New Year, with the movie being the first in a new trilogy which will eventually link up with Scott’s 1979 benchmark 'Alien’.

While there are no specific details on plot yet, Scott confirmed that old alien adversaries like the Giger-designed facehuggers and chestbursters will be involved.

He told The Wrap: “They’re going to go to the planet where the engineers came from, and come across the evolving creature that they had made. Why did they make it? Why would they make such a terrifying beast?

“It felt bio-mechanoid, it felt like a weapon. And so the movie will explain that, and reintroduce the alien back into it.

“There was always this discussion: Is Alien, the character, the beast, played out or not? We’ll have them all: egg, facehugger, chestburster, then the big boy. I think maybe we can go another round or two.”

Last month he told The Hollywood Reporter: “I’m now going to the next one, which is the next evolution directly connected with the first one.

“When that’s finished there’ll be another one and then another one which will gradually drive into the back entrance of the film in 1979.

“So in other words, why was this space jockey there and why did he have an alien inside him? And those questions will be answered.”

The appointment tops off a breakthrough year for Waterston, following her turn in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 'Inherent Vice’ with landing a plum part in 'Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’ opposite Eddie Redmayne.

That movie came off the back of her role in Danny Boyle’s 'Steve Jobs’, where she played Chrisann Brennan, ex-girlfriend of the Apple co-founder and mother of his daughter.

Waterston is the daughter of Oscar-nominated actor Sam Waterston, known for his roles in 'The Killing Fields’ and long-running TV series 'Law & Order’.

Katherine was born in the UK while her parents – her mother is former model Lynn Louisa Woodruff – were working in London.

Her sister Elisabeth is also an actress, and her brother Graham is a director, while her half-brother James Waterston played Gerard Pitts in 'Dead Poets Society’.
