Katherine Waterston had this amazing thing to say about comparing her “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” character to Hermione
On November 18th we’ll all be returning to the Wizarding World of J.K. Rowling when the upcoming first instalment of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film series is released.
Now, to say that we’re excited for the film would be a bit of an understatement. Like Harry counting down the days until he left the Dursley’s and headed back to Hogwarts, we’ve put up a giant calendar in our bedrooms and we’re literally crossing off the days until we get to meet Newton Artemis Fido Scamander and join him on what looks set to be one crazy adventure.
The film charters Newt Scamander’s journey to New York from England to meet with the Magical Congress of the United States of America. During his visit, a briefcase he’s carrying, which contains a multitude of magical creatures, somehow manages to open and the creatures escape.
While trying to re-capture the creatures, Newt and his new team of friends become embroiled in a wider battle between magical and non-magical peoples (or No-Majes i.e. muggles).
The film stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston as Porpentina ‘Tina’ Goldstein, a young intelligent witch and former aurora, who is stuck working in a boring desk job, and Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, a no-maj who gets swept up in the magical world.
Of course this being in anyway related to the Potter-verse, people are obviously looking for connections between the new set of characters and our favorites from the seven Potter books and (eight) films.
Despite this, Katherine Waterston wants everyone to know that she’s not taking cues from Hermione Granger for her role as Tina just because both characters are women.
Speaking to Collider, Katherine said that, in fact, comparing the two characters hadn’t even cross her mind.
“It never occurred to me to compare myself to her just because we’re both female, in any way,” the actress said. “You know, they’re totally different characters and I don’t feel like I’m stepping into her shoes simply because I’m a woman.”
YES! This is SO true. Just because they’re two female characters from the same film universe, it doesn’t mean that they have to be alike, or, indeed, be in anyway compared or pit against each other.
Continuing, Katherine said that while she doesn’t really have a problem with people thinking about her character in that way, it just wouldn’t be how she thought, mainly because she’s a huge Hermione fan.
“It just never occurred to me to think of it in those terms and probably it would make me nervous at the thought of it because she was so good in those films. So, I just don’t think about that.”
Katherine then went on to say what it was like meeting J.K. Rowling for the first time and and we’re screaming with jealousy.
“[A]s soon as we started speaking to her, she started to do kinda what I imagined she would do and was hoping she would do when we met her which is just start telling us stuff ’cause she has this encyclopedic knowledge of this world,” she revealed. “Like, she just has that kind of detailed mind.”
Omg, imagine being able to quiz Rowling IRL about all things Wizarding World!? We’d probably combust with the amount of questions we have.
Same, tbh.
“[W]hen I first read the script I just thought it was beautiful,” Katherine continued. “It was really moving and really didn’t feel like ‘Number Nine’. You know it didn’t feel like this sort of tired thing.
“It felt really fresh and new, which was what was so appealing about it to me.”
Okay, we CANNOT wait until Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them now. Only 52 days to go…
