The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have thanked royal watchers for their wishes on their eighth wedding anniversary.

Kate, 37, and William, 36, posted several photos of their big day on April 29, 2011 on their @KensingtonRoyal social media accounts.

Their message read: “8 years ago today — thank you for your lovely messages on The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding anniversary!”

The photos showed the newlyweds waving from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, the couple walking down the aisle of Westminster Abbey with Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton behind them, another of brothers William and Harry together and a fourth showing a crowd of well-wishers with flags.

It is believed that the Cambridges are celebrating their anniversary privately. William has just returned from his trip to New Zealand, where he paid tribute to the victims of the Christchurch terror attacks.

Kate has an engagement this week, where she will open the new Anna Freud Centre of Excellence in North London.

The couple met at the University of St Andrews in Scotland in 2001 and began dating in around 2003.

Their engagement was announced in November 2010 and William proposed with his mother Princess Diana’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

23 million viewers tuned in to watch the couple tie the knot in a historic ceremony in Westminster Abbey.

Kate wore a satin and lace wedding dress, designed by Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen. She borrowed the Cartier halo tiara from the Queen’s jewellery collection, which was made in 1936 for the Queen Mother.

William wore his red Irish Guards uniform, while best man and brother Harry wore the uniform of a captain of the Blues and Royals.
