The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge don traditional Chitrali hats – just like Princess Diana

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been given traditional Chitrali hats as part of their Pakistan royal tour – just like Princess Diana was in 1991.
Duchess Kate and Prince William, both 37, visited the Hindu Kush mountain region near the Afghan border in northern Pakistan on Tuesday.
The royal pair arrived by helicopter in the region, where they were presented with Chitrali hats, a soft-topped men’s hat.

The cap, typically made of wool and manufactured in Chitral, is popular amongst the Pashtun, Tajik and Nuristani men of Afghanistan, and in the the KPK (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) region in Pakistan.
Princess Diana was presented with a similar cap during her 1991 visit. The late Princess of Wales visited the region twice more, in 1996 and in 1997, the year of her death.

This isn’t the only nod to Diana the couple have made during the Pakistan tour.
The pair have also channelled the late royal’s colour choices during her 1991 tour of Pakistan, with Kate’s blue and green hues matching Diana’s looks – a detail highlighted by Pakistani journalist Gharidah Farooqi on Twitter.

Prince William shared a touching moment with a student at a school in Islamabad on Tuesday when he reminisced about his late mother.

Told by 14-year-old Aima that she and fellow students were a “big fan” of Diana, William responded: “Oh that's very sweet of you. I was a big fan of my mother too. She came here three times. This is my first time and it is very nice to be here and meet you all."
Later on, yesterday evening, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were praised for their traditional Pakistani dress during a reception hosted by the British High Commissioner. Kate wore a screen print chiffon dupatta over her Jenny Packham gown, while Prince William donned a traditional green sherwani – a coat-like garment that is custom to the region.
