Kate Middleton Wears a Black Coat Dress for First Royal Engagement Following Prince Philip's Funeral

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are heading back to work.

Today, Prince William and Duchess Kate set out on their first royal engagement following the passing of Prince Philip. The couple made a joint appearance at the 282 East Ham Squadron, Air Training Corps in East London to speak with Air Cadets about their work to support young people in developing vital life skills. During the visit, the squadron paid tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh, who was the Air Commodore-in-Chief of the Air Training Corps for 63 years. Back in 2015, Philip passed the military patronage on to the Duchess of Cambridge, who then became Honorary Air Commandant.

For the visit, which falls within the official monthlong mourning period following Philip's death, both William and Kate dressed in black to show respect for the late prince. Kate wore a coat dress for the occasion, paired with classic black pumps and a small leather clutch. While touring the indoor facility, both the duke and duchess wore protective face masks.

William and Kate also took part in field craft exercises and leadership tasks during their visit before speaking with a group of young people who are preparing for the organization's Duke of Edinburgh Awards, which have taken place since the program began in 1956. Toward the end of their visit, the squadron performed a Three Cheers Salute in honor of Prince Philip, who frequently met and kept in touch with cadets throughout his time as head of the patronage.
