The Duchess of Cambridge opened up about her shyness during a heartwarming moment with schoolgirl at a picnic to celebrate the move of her Chelsea Flower Show garden.

Kate, 37, invited children, parents and carers from her patronages (Anna Freud Centre, Evelina Children’s Hospital, Action for Children and Place2Be) to explore the new space at Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival.

Hello! reports the mum-of-three spotted that Khareesha James, eight, was feeling shy as they visited her RHS Back to Nature Garden.

Showing off her maternal side, Kate took the schoolgirl into the garden’s den for a private chat and told her that she likes to hide in them when she is feeling shy.

Khareesha reportedly said: “I am shy and she said that’s where she goes when she’s shy – in the tent.”

The schoolgirl’s mum Sophia Dowd told Hello!: “Khareesha is very shy – she doesn’t talk too much to people – and she (Kate) took her over to speak to her. She was really nice with her.”

Khareesha said the talk with the duchess made her feel better.

During the engagement, Kate led a treasure hunt and insect-spotting with the children.

The project is part of Kate’s longstanding work on early years and how spending time outdoors plays a pivotal role in children’s future health and happiness.

The garden the duchess co-designed with award-winning landscape architects Andrée Davies and Adam White for the Chelsea Flower Show was a huge success, with visitors queuing for up to two hours to view the space.

Kate even took her three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis to play in the garden before its opening day at the Chelsea Flower Show in May.
