Kate del Castillo Breaks Silence on El Chapo to Diane Sawyer in First TV Interview

Kate del Castillo has broken her silence in her first television interview following her controversial meeting with Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

The actress sat down with ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer about the astounding experience.

Sawyer talked about the interview — part of a special edition of “20/20” that airs Friday at 10 p.m. ET on ABC — Friday morning on “Good Morning America.”

Clips from the interview include discussions about del Castillo’s relationships with Guzman and Sean Penn, who was part of the meeting that took place deep in the mountains of Mexico three month before Guzman was captured by authorities on Jan. 8.

Del Castillo, a motorcycle and race car enthusiast who plays drug lord Teresa Mendoza in the telenovela “La Reina del Sur,” told Sawyer that she’s addicted to risk.

“I don’t think it was necessarily me, Kate del Castillo, he probably had a crush on Teresa Mendoza,” she said, before Sawyer probed her further about whether Guzman actually fell for her. “It think he’s maybe an admirer. I don’t know. Okay, maybe yes.”

She admits to feeling hurt by Penn, who she thought was merely helping her get a film made about the drug lord, not writing a Rolling Stone article about the meeting.

“I’m angry at myself because I believe in people and I didn’t know Sean Penn,” del Castillo said.

She told the New Yorker earlier this month that Penn’s claims that she was aware of his intention to write the article were “total and complete bulls—.”
