Kamala Harris is back in the game.

On Tuesday afternoon, Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, selected the California senator as his running mate for the 2020 presidential election. As the duo look ahead to face Donald Trump and Mike Pence, Harris also makes history as the first Black woman and first person of Indian descent to be on a presidential ticket.

Harris, 55, first responded to the news on social media, tweeting that Biden "can unify the American people because he's spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he'll build an America that lives up to our ideals."

She continued, "I'm honored to join him as our party's nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief."

In his VP announcement, Biden called Harris a "fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants." He also looked back at her time as attorney general when she worked closely with his late son, Beau.

"I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse," he tweeted. "I was proud then, and I'm proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign."

Harris was previously one of Biden's opponents in the race for the Democratic nomination. (Her famous "that little girl was me" quote was targeted toward the former vice president, pointing out how his opposition to a desegregation measure affected her personally.) The senator dropped out of the race in December 2019 due to a lack of funds. Months later, in March 2020, she endorsed Biden's bid for the presidency, and in the following months was considered a top contender for his VP pick.

"I’ve decided that Kamala Harris is the best person to help me take this fight to Donald Trump and Mike Pence and then to lead this nation starting in January 2021," Biden wrote in an email to his supporters, per NBC. "I need someone working alongside me who is smart, tough, and ready to lead. Kamala is that person."

He later added, "I need someone who understands that we are in a battle for the soul of this nation. And that if we’re going to get through these crises—we need to come together and unite for a better America. Kamala gets that."
