From Esquire

We are just over a month away from the glorious wealth of gaming insight we get from the video game convention E3, but PlayStation decided it'd give us a little appetizer a month early. While the gaming behemoth won't be attending E3 this year, it's following Nintendo's lead with video press releases. While the previous "State of Play" was lackluster for non-VR owners, with Iron Man VR being the biggest announcement, this "State of Play" had news for all PlayStation 4 users.

If you don't have the time to watch the jam-packed 12-minute conference, here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know, from new details about the Final Fantasy VII remake to our first look at Sony's new limited-edition PS4 console.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

To the surprise of, well, everyone, we finally got out first look at the Final Fantasy VII remake, which seems like a dig at my earlier remarks in our list of highly anticipated PS4 games for 2019. This looks amazing, and it’s reassuring that we got any look at all. While this was more of a small gameplay and story teaser with no concrete information about its timeline release, we did get confirmation that we'll learn more in June, presumably at Square Enix's E3 panel. Regardless, it got my blood rushing all over again for this fantastic re-release.

Predator: Hunting Grounds

While there's not much information out on this squad shooter that pits you against the titular Predator, the cinematic preview shown looks amazing. Who hasn't wanted to team up and take down that son-of-a-bitch predator with their friends (and that random guy screaming at your group of three on the mic)? This seems like a title that's either very early in development or being saved for a more E3-centric State of Play announcement. Either way, it's a big surprise-and looks like it'll be higher tier than other Predator titles.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

The critically acclaimed monster hunting game Monster Hunter World is getting a chilly new DLC expansion called Iceborne, arriving on September 6. This package will contain new armor, story, and of course, new monsters. If you haven't checked out Monster Hunter World yet, definitely give it a go before Iceborne releases.

Riverbond

Riverbond is an indie dungeon crawler coming this summer. A gorgeous and colorful title, it now features a stunning cast of indie guest stars like Shovel Knight and Raz from the stellar PsychoNauts. While the title doesn't appear to be deep, it looks like a lot of good old-fashion, co-op fun.

MediEvil

The remake of the classic 1998 hack-and-slash MediEvil got a release date: October 23. I’m a big fan of Sir Daniel Fortesque, even when no one knew who he was in PlayStation Allstars Battle Royale. One of the most style-forward games from back in the days of PSX, it'll give us retro gamers awesome new graphics and fun gameplay.

Away: Survival Series

This is Animal Planet: The Video Game. You work in a food chain to try and survive prey and nature, and it actually looks pretty cool. The environments are gorgeous, and by the early looks, it may have a very in-depth AI system. Not a lot is known, but let's hope there's some co-op and online multiplayer-swooping down as a vulture and taking out my rodent friends is one of the only gaming experiences I’ve been missing.

Days of Play

Days of Play is like a Christmas, or Hanukkah, or Amazon Prime Day, for gamers. There’s always limited-edition goodies and great deals to find, and it's widespread through retailers. Last year, we got a fun blue and gold LE PlayStation, and this year Sony went an equally exciting (but subtle) route. During State of Play, a metallic-steel, dark grey PlayStation console was revealed that will be released for Sony's Days of Play. It’s a standard PS4 with a 1tb hard drive, and there’s a wonderful controller to match, which I for one am hoping gets a separate release. We’re glad to see Days of Play making a return, as it's usually a summer event I’m sure we’ll get more info very soon.
