Now, this is big! English actor Jude Law has been cast as the male lead alongside Brie Larson in Captain Marvel.

Variety reports that the 44-year-old is playing Doctor Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, a mentor figure to Air Force pilot Carol Danvers (Larson), who becomes Captain Marvel.

If you’re a fan of the comics, you’ll have immediately spotted that Mar-Vell is the name of the Kree soldier who came to Earth and became a superhero. Because Earthlings mispronounced his name, he became known as…Captain Marvel.

Confusing, I know. But Mar-Vell is a precursor to Danvers, while Lawson is a human identity that Mar-Vell takes on. He eventually gives his life for humanity, which might give you a clue to his fate on the big screen.

In the movie, Danvers’ DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident, giving her superpowers. Rogue One actor Ben Mendelsohn is also on board as the villain, while Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said the movie will be set in the 1990s long before the Avengers come onto the scene.

Law, most recently seen in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (see our review), will also be playing a young Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts sequel. He is also still attached to star in a third Sherlock Holmes film.
