‘Batgirl’ is coming to the big screen…

And it looks as though Joss Whedon will be at the helm.

According to Variety, the former ‘Avengers Assemble’ director will be heading up DC’s upcoming Batman spin-off, giving Batgirl her first solo outing… oh, and he’s writing it, too.

“Batgirl is flying solo. The superheroine is getting her own standalone movie from filmmaker Joss Whedon,” they revealed. “Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl pic for Warner Bros. as part of its DC Extended Universe.”

Joss Whedon has been interested in heading up a DC project for some time.

He’s always been clear that if he did join DC at Warner Bros. he would want to make a female-led superhero film… and now it looks as though he’s been granted his wish.

But will there be any cool DC cameos?

“The project will also feature other characters from the world of Gotham,” they revealed. Unfortunately, there’s no hint about which characters might feature in the movie at this stage. But I wouldn’t mind betting Batman himself makes an appearance at some point.

Batgirl first appeared on the pages of DC Comics back in 1967 as Barbara Gordon – the daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner, James Gordon. Detective Comics #359 was ‘The Million Dollar Debut Of Batgirl’ and saw Barbara Gordon suiting up for her first adventure against Killer Moth.

It’s unclear who she’ll be facing in the upcoming movie.

“The Batgirl project will be the second movie from DC Films to star a female lead after Gal Gadot’s ‘Wonder Woman’, which opens June 2. Extensive footage was shown Wednesday at CinemaCon.”

And with ‘Gotham City Sirens’ coming soon, it looks as though DC is making great efforts to introduce a more inclusive superhero slate.

As for who will play Batgirl… for now, we have to wait and see.
