Jon M. Chu to helm movie about Journey's Arnel Pineda

The Hollywood director is inspired by the Filipino singer's own journey

10 Dec – Hollywood director Jon M. Chu, known for his box office film, "Crazy Rich Asians", is set to helm a movie revolving around the life of Filipino singer, Arnel Pineda.

As reported on Rappler, Warner Bros is currently in negotiations to license the original Journey tunes, most written by Steve Perry and Neal Schon, at the same time acquiring rights to "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey".

According to Chu, the success of "Crazy Rich Asians" has inspired him to do more movies that represents new perspectives from around the world.

"This story in particular has been on my mind since I first read about it years ago. A true fairy tale and triumph of the human spirit. An unlikely hero, an undeniable talent, the power of music and a worldwide stage (literally) has all the ingredients I love about movies," he said, adding that he has always been a fan of Journey.


Arnel Pineda, originally from Manila, came to prominence in the Philippines in the 1980s when he became the lead singer of Pinoy band Ijos at 15. However, he experienced a newfound fame in 2007 when he became the new lead singer of the American rock band after capturing the attention of Journey co-founder Neal Schon through his Journey covers on YouTube.
