Johnny Depp has claimed that his ex-wife Amber Heard punched him ‘twice in the face’ after he was late for her birthday party in 2016.

The claims have emerged in legal documents as part of his defamation lawsuit against The Sun newspaper, via The Daily Mirror.

The papers allege that following the party, Heard ‘began criticising the claimant for being late’, and then ‘Ms Heard, who had been drinking, became aggressive and violent… punching him twice in the face’.

The court filing goes on to say that Depp ‘defended himself by grabbing Ms Heard’s arms to stop her punching again and told her to stop’.

“He pushed her away on to the bed and told her he was leaving and that she should not follow him,” the claim continues.

The papers also refer to claims that Heard made when she took a restraining order out on Depp, prior to their divorce, in which she said that the actor violently assaulted her, throwing a mobile phone at her.

Depp’s legal team claim that when police arrived to the disturbance, the attending officers saw no marks on her face, and when asked what had been going on, she replied ‘nothing’.

Reps for Depp also claim that his security staff also back up his story.

“The security observed [Depp] standing in the kitchen, far away from Ms Heard. At that moment, Ms Heard yelled, ”Stop hitting me, Johnny’ into the phone. The claimant was not hitting Ms Heard. Ms Heard was about 25 feet away,” the documents read.

Depp is suing The Sun for defamation, after an article was published headlined ‘How can J.K. Rowling be ‘genuinely happy’ casting wife-beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film?’ referring to his role in Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Depp has always denied the allegations of assault, and on finalising the settlement of their divorce, the couple said in a joint statement that their ‘relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love’.

It added that neither Depp or Heard had ‘made false accusations for financial gain’ and that there was ‘never any intent of physical or emotional harm’.

Lawyers for Ms Heard denied the claims, telling the Mirror: “These allegations are totally false. One needs only read the recent Rolling Stone article about Mr Depp and the lawsuit filed against him by a location manager, among many other recent news stories and lawsuits, to understand his state of mind.”
