John Woo to turn "Red Cliff" into online series?

20 May – Rumours are rife that John Woo is set to turn his period movie, "Red Cliff" into a web drama.

As reported on Epoch Times, sources recently stated that the filmmaker has been in talks with mainland studio Renrenpai about possibly turning the work online, with the plan of casting original stars including Tony Leung and Lin Chi-ling.

The company's CEO Liao Baojun also recently posted a photo of him with Woo on social media, though only captioning it, "There are more than a dozen meetings a day. On the road of a struggle, no one will succeed easily."

Renrenpai also reportedly stated that it hopes to complete the script this year, and will work closely with Woo on the content of the project.

It is noted that the original film has two parts which were released in 2008 and 2009. The movie is based on the Battle of Red Cliffs (208–209 A.D.) and the events at the end of the Han dynasty and immediately prior to the Three Kingdoms period in imperial China. It made US$250.1 million worldwide with a budget of USD 80 million.

Among others who starred in the movie include Takeshi Kaneshiro, Chang Chen, Zhao Wei, Hu Jun and Zhang Fengyi.
