Sir John Hurt has revealed that he’s been given the all-clear by doctors after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The star of movies like ‘The Elephant Man’ and the 'Harry Potter’ series only revealed that he was being treated for the disease four months ago.

In an interview with the Daily Mail while attending the Booker Prize ceremony in London last night, he was jubilant.

“I had a final scan and it’s all gone brilliantly,” he said.

“I had the final scan yesterday [Monday] and I saw my oncologist this morning. I am overjoyed, I am thrilled. It all looks great for the future, it’s fantastic.”

It was in June that he revealed he had the disease, but also added that he was going to continue working regardless, notably on a Radio 4 adaptation of 'Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell’.

He was knighted in July, and then underwent chemotherapy treatment.

Speaking to the Radio Times in August, he said: “I can’t say I worry about mortality, but it’s impossible to get to my age and not have a little contemplation of it.

“We’re all just passing time, and occupy our chair very briefly. But my treatment is going terrifically well, so I’m optimistic.”

Meanwhile, he added that he’s heading to Northern Ireland today to begin work on a new project.

Hurt has starred in a wealth of movies in a career spanning over 50 years, including the adaptation of Orwell’s 'Nineteen Eighty-Four’ and 'Scandal’.

He also starred in the 1983 movie 'Champions’, in which he played the jockey Bob Champion, who beat testicular cancer and went on to win the 1981 Grand National.
