John Boyega Teases Action for Finn, Darker Story in Next 'Star Wars'

Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega says that Episode VIII will show off the darker side of Star Wars — and that his character Finn will be in the middle of the action. Speaking with British Vogue, the actor was enthusiastic about director Rian Johnson’s script for the 2017 sequel. “It’s great. Much darker, but we’re very excited,” said Boyega. (Warning: Force Awakens spoilers ahead.)

Though Boyega didn’t undergo a training regime for his lightsaber battle in The Force Awakens, he told the magazine that the new movie may require some heavy lifting. “My part in the next film will be much more physical so I might be in the gym a bit more,” said the actor. (Boyega’s co-star Daisy Ridley, who had more fight scenes in The Force Awakens than Boyega, did extensive physical training to play Rey.)

These tidbits about the new movie are reminiscent of the differences between the very first Star Wars movie, A New Hope, and its darker, more action-packed sequel The Empire Strikes Back. Since the story arc of The Force Awakens closely paralleled A New Hope (right down to the unexpected death of a mentor and the droid carrying stolen documents), it makes sense that the filmmakers would stick with the formula for the next two sequels. Anybody want to bet on who gets their hand chopped off in Episode VIII?
