It's no secret that Joanna Gaines is incredibly talented. To name a few highlights, she's starred in her own HGTV show, launched a massive business that put Waco, Texas on the map, designed a home decor line with Target, and even wrote a design book. But what most people don't realize is that the mother of five has also found the secret to getting your kids to share a bedroom peacefully. In a new interview with CountryLiving.com, she revealed that the keys to success are all in the design. Here's how she does it.

To start Gaines goes for a neutral shade of paint on the walls. "Your job is just to set the template for them and have fun watching them layer their room," she said. A simple color creates the backdrop for what comes next: carving out individual space for each child within in the room.

To do this, Gaines relies on storage. Not only do bins and boxes help keep toys tucked away and the room tidy, but they also give kids a little bit of ownership over their dedicated area. "Each kid has their own organizational stuff. For the boys, they have a lot of the shared stuff, but the baskets under the bed-half are one boy’s and the other half are the others. They have their spot that kind of says 'this is my stuff,' and it works for them," the designer explains.

To help her kids express their individuality even further, Gaines designs special places for them to show off their interests. In her boys' room, she built a special wall system for each son. "Duke likes to collect things, so you see all these boxes-he’s got a ton of collectibles. And then Drake is really into trophies and sports stuff, and he’s got his open shelves. It’s about giving them plenty of space for their stuff, but then also carving out something that displays what they love," she told CountryLiving.com.

The designer notes that you can also accomplish the same idea using colors. In her daughters' bedroom, Gaines incorporated a few items in each of their favorite colors, blue for Emmie, and pink for Ella. "Once they feel like they can own their little space, that’s all they needed," she said.

Finally, Gaines reveals that sometimes you just have let go of the reins a little. "I’ve gotten so much more laid back about kids' rooms in general because, to me, that’s the space where they want to feel the most creative and the most known. And sometimes that means there’s certain things that you wouldn’t pick yourself." Though, if you're Joanna Gaines it might be a little easier to trust your child's decor instincts―style runs in the family.
