J.J. Abrams: Harrison Ford’s Injury Saved Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Harrison Ford’s injury was undoubtedly the darkest moment of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’’ shoot. But J.J. Abrams has now admitted that this accident actually gave him an opportunity to make some changes, which he believes ultimately saved the film.

J.J. Abrams made this admission while taking part in a discussion with Chris Rock at the Tribeca Film Festival, explaining that the first scenes shot on the Millenium Falcon didn’t work at all.

“When I was on the set of the Millennium Falcon and we started to do work with Rey and Finn, the first time we did it, it didn’t work at all. It was much more contentious. I didn’t direct it right. It was set up all wrong,” Abrams told the crowd, via Radio Times.

“And when Harrison Ford got injured – which was a very scary day – we ended up having a few weeks off, and it was during that time that I really got to look at what we had done and rewrite quite a bit of that relationship.”

Once Harrison Ford had fully recuperated from his injury, these scenes were then shot afresh, with Abrams admitting that this period gave him the perfect opportunity to “get these two characters to where they needed to be.”

Harrison Ford wasn’t the only one to make a sacrifice during the shooting of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That’s because J.J. Abrams actually injured his back while attempting to assist his stricken star, too.

Obviously the pair now deserve kudos for collectively taking one for the team, and ultimately helping ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ become a much better film.
