Jennylyn Mercado defends right to express political views

6 Aug – Jennylyn Mercado recently took to social media to defend her right to express her political opinion.

As reported on ABS-CBN News, the Kapuso actress went on Twitter and posted, "The moment you hinder someone from speaking their mind is the moment you fail to respect the rights of your fellow Filipino."

Although she made no mention as to whom she was responding to, Mercado further posted, "Should there be a qualification before you have the right to comment on social issues? Isn't it enough that you are a citizen of the Philippines and you pay taxes? Why when a pandemic afflicts us all then others are forced to be silenced?"

The actress admitted that she is confused as to why some people seem to forget to respect others when facing a different political opinion.

"Isn't [being respectful] one of the first things our parents teach us?" she added.

It is noted that the "Descendants of the Sun" actress has been active online in recent weeks, especially in criticising the government's response to the pandemic and the forced shutdown of ABS-CBN.
