When it comes to making music, the first instrument that comes to a person’s mind is probably a piano, violin or guitar. But, have you heard of using a calculator as a musical instrument?

Japanese YouTuber It’s a small world covered the one song video gamers will all know well: The Super Mario Brothers theme. The iconic tune has been covered many times before, using various musical instruments – including this wonderful violin cover – but YouTuber It’s a small world has amazed everyone with her rendition using calculators.

She clarified that the song was arranged for easier playing, and that she had to accommodate for the tones the calculators do not have.

Since her upload on 29 September, the video has reached almost 3 million views with 71,000 likes, and comments such as “You never cease to amaze me,” “That’s some talent right there” and “Make math great again!” Some even joked, “Them: I can play the guitar! Another them: Cool, I play violin. It’s a small world: I play calculators.”

If you thought you were so clever by typing messages like “80085” (boobs) on your calculator, think again; It’s a small world has just taken the calculator to a whole new level.

On top of her cover of the 8-bit Mario tune, It’s a small world has also tried playing the theme song of Pirates of the Caribbean and Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You. Both songs use two calculators.

Apparently, It’s a small world is not the first YouTuber to use calculators to make music. Another user Ryon, who is known to play the piano with only one finger, has similar uploads as well, such as this other famous song:

The calculator music seems so easy to play – and yet so complicated. It sure reminds us of simpler days, when we could customise our mobile phone ringtone by pressing the numbers on the keypad!
