Twenty-five years after making her debut, popular Japanese singer Namie Amuro announced her plans for retirement on Wednesday (20 September), the same day as her 40th birthday.

“I, Namie Amuro, would like to take this opportunity to inform all of my fans of my decision to retire as of September 16, 2018,” she said in a notice on her website in Japanese and English.

Amuro will officially retire on the 26th anniversary of her debut and, according to her post, has plans to release a final album and perform at concerts during her last year in show business.

In the post, she also thanked her fans for their support, saying “I could not have gone 25 years without your support, for which I am eternally grateful.”

The Okinawa-native gained widespread popularity in the late 90s, and according to The Japan Times, is widely regarded to have sparked a style trend known as “Amuraa” among many young women at that time.

Since her debut in 1992, Amuro has become a well-known fixture in the J-pop scene, and has produced hits such as “Can You Celebrate?”, “Chase the Chance”, and “Body Feels Exit”.
