SINGAPORE — Those planning to visit Japan in summer 2020 may be able to get free round-trip domestic flights, courtesy of a promotional campaign announced by Japan Airlines (JAL) on Friday (27 December).

To be launched in late February, the “Win a Trip with JAL” campaign will offer up to 50,000 free round-trip air tickets between 1 July and 30 September next year.

This ties in with Tokyo’s hosting of the Summer Olympics and Paralympics. The Olympics is scheduled to run from 24 July to 9 August, while the Paralympics will run from 25 August to 6 September.

The promotion is applicable to JAL domestic routes from Tokyo (Haneda Airport) and Osaka (Itami/Kansai Airports). JAL will recommend each traveller four destinations, from which the traveller can select one.

The number of available seats is limited and may not be applicable on some routes, flights and dates. More details on the promotion will be disclosed in mid-January.

To be eligible for the promotion, passengers must reside outside Japan, and must be a JAL Mileage Bank member. They must either hold non-Japanese passports, or are Japanese passport holders with rights of permanent residence in other countries.

This promotion campaign by JAL is part of the “Your Japan 2020 Campaign” to be launched by the Japan Tourism Agency and the Japan National Tourism Organization next year.

According to the Nikkei Asian Review, the tourism campaign seeks to ease the accommodation shortage expected in Tokyo over the Olympics period by boosting tourist travel to other parts of Japan.
