Janice Yan excited for first musical with Ti Lung

17 May – Hong Kong singer Janice Yan recently admitted that she is both excited and surprised to have been invited to play the role of Mei in the Hong Kong musical adaptation of the 1983 film, "Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing?"

As reported on Mingpao, the singer, who spoke about her role as Mei - a singer who was forced to abandon her father and community to become a star - shared that there are many things to consider when she accepted the role.

"I have to dance in addition to singing. Fortunately, I learned ballet when I was young. I am accustomed to all the training," she said.

Janice also stated that she is confident that she would be able to play the role efficiently, albeit its tragic storyline.

Asked if she is stressed about having to perform the film's hit song, "Any Empty Wine Bottles for Sale" (originally performed by Su Rui), she said, "There is no pressure. I don't like to compare myself to others. I will perform the song based on my own feelings and understanding of the character. It would be different."

Janice also stated that she has enjoyed rehearsing with her co-star Ti Lung, who plays the role of Mei's mute father.

"When I first met him, he was very warm and made me feel relaxed. I am very excited," she said.

Prior to Janice, Chinese singer Della Ding played the role of Mei in last year's musical adaptation of the said movie, which was renamed "An Accident of Love".
