James M. Nederlander Dies: Broadway Icon Ruled Main Stem Real Estate
James M. Nederlander Sr., whose Broadway real estate holdings include nine Main Stem houses that made his Nederlander Organization the largest family-owned theater business, died Monday in South Hampton, NY. He was 94.
Nederlander started his regional theatre business in Detroit and began acquiring New York properties in the 1960s. Only the Shubert Organization owns more property on Broadway with 16, and Jujamcyn Theaters owns five.
“He was my best friend, and partner in every aspect of our business,” said his son, James L. Nederlander, said in a statement. “We collaborated every day. The world has lost one of its great impresarios.”
According to the Associated Press, Nederlander produced or co-produced more than 100 Broadway shows including Annie, The Will Rogers Follies, La Cage aux Folles and Nine. He won 12 Tony Awards, including a lifetime achievement award in 2004. That same year, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which sits outside the Nederlander-owned Pantages Theatre.
