James Franco Shows Off His Tommy Wiseau Hair in a First Look at ‘The Disaster Artist’

James Franco is, by Hollywood standards, an eccentric artist. But the 37-year-old actor/director/writer’s long list of off-beat art projects and movies looks like a stack of paint-by-numbers canvasses compared to the bizarre and so-bad-they’re-good films of The Room auteur Tommy Wiseau. Franco will get his chance to reach Wiseau-level heights, though, since he’ll be playing the mysterious director in The Disaster Artist, the big-screen adaptation of the book about the making of Wiseau’s insane 2003 cult film, a romantic drama that was once described in an Entertainment Weekly feature as “the Citizen Kane of bad movies.”
As you can tell from the photo Franco posted to Instagram (above) yesterday, he’s already having a ton of fun in the part. “THE DISASTER ARTIST: The making of THE ROOM. It has begun!!!!!” he wrote in the caption.

Just look at that flowing black hair! What commitment! He looks quite a bit like the real Wiseau (minus the sunglasses), who is featured in the photo below:

Franco is also directing the project and cast his brother, Dave Franco — also pictured with fabulous hair — as Greg Sestero, an actor who wrote The Disaster Artist book after befriending Wiseau and co-starring in The Room. Seth Rogen, who’s producing The Disaster Artist, will also appear in the movie, as will Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson.
The Disaster Artist has also recently added several more co-stars, including Jacki Weaver, Ari Graynor, Hannibal Buress, and Kate Upton.
The big-screen adaptation of The Disaster Artist was written by Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustadter, the screenwriters of (500) Days of Summer, The Spectacular Now, and John Green adaptations The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns.
