James Cameron wants glasses-free 3D for Avatar sequels

‘Avatar’ director James Cameron must be a Nintendo 3DS fan…

During a speech at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, the 62-year-old filmmaker unveiled his ideas for the future of ‘Avatar’ - 3D without the glasses.

“I’m going to push,” he said. “Not only for better tools, workflow, high dynamic range (HDR) and high frame rates (HFR) — the things we are working toward… I’m still very bullish on 3D, but we need brighter projection, and ultimately I think it can happen — with no glasses. We’ll get there.”

Of course, glasses-free 3D is a concept that hasn’t been realised just yet… at least, not on the big screen. The Nintendo 3DS is the only currently-available version of the tech in use today. But with restrictive viewing angles and poor quality when it comes to cinematic video, it seems Cameron has a long way to go.

‘Avatar’ is often considered one of the most beautiful films to make use of modern 3D techniques… and following its release, went on to earn the accolade of highest grossing movie of all time.

But don’t think for one minute that makes James Cameron complacent.

Even before ‘Avatar’, he was renowned in the movie business for pushing the boundaries - his films such as ‘Alien’, ‘Aliens’ and the first two ‘Terminator’ movies are considered to be technical marvels when it comes to their visual effects.

Clearly, he s got some big plans for his next few movies… even if they are going to be ‘Avatar’ sequels after ‘Avatar’ sequels.

But will he deliver?

Whether or not glasses-free 3D becomes a reality for the big screen remains to be seen. But Cameron already has a huge variety of modern tools at his disposal. If anyone can work a bit of filmmaking magic with IMAX, HDR and HFR, it’s James Cameron.

And you never know - he might just push cinema into uncharted territories.

The next ‘Avatar’ movie heads to cinemas in 2018.
