James Cameron & David Fincher Got Deadpool Made

‘Deadpool’ apparently had some help getting to the big screen…

During an interview with IGN, ‘Deadpool’ co-writer Rhett Reese revealed that iconic filmmakers James Cameron and David Fincher helped get the movie off the ground.

“They read the script each of them at two independent key moments during the script’s development,” he explained. “And each one of them was kind enough to go to 20th Century Fox and essentially throw in their good word just saying ‘Hey, what are you guys doing with Deadpool? You should be making this!’.”

“David was a help before Jim and he was just kind of nudging along the way,” he added. “And then Jim ultimately weighed in in a key decision node moment and got Fox to free up some money to try a PG-13 draft at the time - that was not Jim’s idea, that was Fox’s idea.”

Of course, ‘Deadpool’ didn’t end up keeping the PG-13 rating for long… and eventually headed to cinemas across the US as an R-Rated movie (That’s an 18 here in the UK).

It even became one the highest grossing R-Rated movie of all time.

“I think a project that is dormant often just suffers from neglect, and I think having those powerful people weigh in at certain times just lodged with Fox and I think it had a cumulative effect more than anything.”

And director Tim Miller also confirmed that they helped get the film into production.

“First of all they’re probably mad at me for ever having… because that was never intended to be public knowledge!” he said. “Listen - the industry listens to tastemakers and you could not find two gentlemen who have better taste in what should become a movie or be made into a movie and so I just thought that maybe they could help push the boulder up the hill a little bit, which they kindly did.”

But perhaps it was always destined to happen…

After all, following the leaked release of the original ‘Deadpool’ test footage, 20th Century Fox had to sit up and take notice. Both fans and critics alike responded extremely well to the footage… and it’s often credit as the kickstart moment the movie needed.

But having Cameron and Fincher on board definitely helped.

‘Deadpool’ heads to DVD and Blu-ray on 13 June 2016.
