James Cameron Announces Four Avatar Sequels

It looks as though ‘Avatar’ is getting even more sequels than we thought…

Making a surprise appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, filmmaker James Cameron revealed that he’s now working on four ‘Avatar’ sequels, instead of his earlier tally of three.

“The next time I see you will be on Pandora,” he told the CinemaCon crowd. “We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic process.” And he’s really not kidding.

It’s no secret that ‘Avatar’ was a huge success for 20th Century Fox back in 2009… and with its ground-breaking stereoscopic filming, it was considered the big success story of modern 3D movies.

And for good reason – it really was a visual spectacular.

But James Cameron clearly has similar plans for the sequels…

“I’ve been working the last couple of years with a team of four top screenwriters, to design the world of Avatar going forward: The characters, the creatures, the environment, the new cultures,” he said. “So far, the art I’m seeing, is in pure imagination, really far beyond the first film. It’s going to be a true epic saga.”

Of course, 20th Century Fox had already planned to make three ‘Avatar’ sequels… but Cameron explained that the huge amount of material they were developing quickly added to the saga.

“We began to bump up against the limitations for our art form,” he said, explaining that the ‘Avatar’ saga would need further films to tell the whole story.

But let’s not forget – Cameron is yet to produce the first sequel… and it’s now seven years after the release of the original movie. Still, it’s apparently just a couple more years before we begin our return to Pandora.

“James Cameron [is] promising that the films will start hitting theaters in 2018,” explained Variety. “The other three films will be released in 2020, 2022, and 2023.”

He also revealed that the films will be shot concurrently and that each of the sequels will feature a standalone story which will eventually combine to form a complete saga.

But will the sequels prove to be as ground-breaking as the original?

For now, we have to wait and see.
