We all know the 2005 tune “You’re Beautiful.” It’s been inescapable since its introduction into the music world. But even though the song has been everywhere for the past twelve years, some people still don’t get it. And singer James Blunt has a message for them: “You’re Beautiful” is not romantic.

“You’re Beautiful” doesn’t detail the true love between a couple, it’s about a sleazy stalker on a subway.

Cute, huh?

Blunt typically writes songs about drugs, staying high, and being on wild trips. After his No. 1 hit, he released four albums with a handful of international hits. As a matter of fact, Blunt is actually a hilarious, self-effacing human being, especially on Twitter. As a result of his reputation, he posted a tweet at the end of last year that read, “If you thought 2016 was bad — I’m releasing an album in 2017.”

His new album, The Afterlove, came out two days ago, and it doesn’t sound like Blunt at all. Crediting Ed Sheeran as encouraging him to be more spontaneous, Blunt uses beats and soft rock to create a new image for himself.

On Friday, Blunt did a remarkable thing for music.

He revealed his honest opinion about “You’re Beautiful” and its listeners to the Huffington Post:

“You get labeled with these things like, ‘Oh, James Blunt. Isn’t he just a soft romantic?’ Well, fuck that. No, I’m not. ‘You’re Beautiful’ is not this soft romantic fucking song. It’s about a guy who’s high as a fucking kite on drugs in the subway stalking someone else’s girlfriend when that guy is there in front of him, and he should be locked up or put in prison for being some kind of perv.”

Commenters have agreed that Blunt’s song is not at all romantic. They call out “Every Breath You Take” by The Police, Peal Jam’s cover of “Last Kiss,” and REM’s “The One I Love” for having similar creep factors.

Anyone want a signed set list of mine from 2006?

Ouch. Think about all of the poor souls who claimed this as their first dance with their lifetime partner. Maybe James Blunt’s new song “Love Me Better” will fill in the gaps for people searching for new special song to dance to.
