Jalil Hamid cries foul over studios paying meagre fee to old actors

15 Jul – Veteran actor Jalil Hamid recently expressed frustration over some studios offering him a meagre sum of money to appear in their productions due to his age.

The 64 year-old actor, who spoke to the media recently to promote his new drama, "Ayahanda", stated that a production company had once offered him only RM150 per episode, which was insulting to a senior actor like him.

"Why are older actors paid cheaper than young actors? Is it because young actors are popular and there are many social media followers? Should veteran actors be insulted and sidelined? Old actors like us are also blessed with talents by God just like the rest of them," he said.

Jalil stated that while he did try to cooperate in the said project by the producer, he didn't last longer than a day as he began to realise how insulting it was to receive such a fee.

"Veteran actors are often boxed in as if it has become a common practice in the arts industry. Apart from receiving cheap payments, our age becomes a question when the term 'old hero' appears if they are given the opportunity to be the lead... This is very unfair to us. Every time a producer offers a low fee, they often came with a "threat" that they will find some other old actor if we say no," he said.

Jalil lamented that some even thought that veteran actors should just accept whatever fee they are offered rather than have no work at all.

Fortunately for the actor, he is now the lead in the new TV3 series, "Ayahanda", directed by Datuk Ahmad Tarmimi Siregar. The new drama is adapted from the novel by the late SEA Write Award 1988 recipient, Azizi Abdullah, which revolves around the writer's own relationship with his father.
