Jaden Smith Is Happy "to Take Most of the Blows" So Everyone Can Wear Skirts Without Judgement
Jaden Smith has rapidly become an androgynous icon for a new generation that refuses to identify themselves according to traditional gender binaries. The 17-year-old has proven himself to be a fearless fashion risk taker, whether he’s wearing an all-white Batman suit to Kanye West and Kim Kardashian and Kanye West‘s wedding or posing in a skirt as the face of Louis Vuitton. And as he told Nylon magazine in his latest cover interview he’s not afraid to “take most of the blows” if it means the future generation of androgynous dressers will get to wear whatever they want to without fear of retaliation.
The teen brought his particular brand of eccentric gender-bending fashion to the cover and inside editorial for the magazine’s annual Denim Issue, wearing a studded and embroidered Gucci jean jacket, a lace turtleneck from Isabel Marant, and rings from Pamela Love. This marks the first time a male celeb has starred alone on Nylon’s cover, and judging from his interview inside the pages, it seems that honor couldn’t be bestowed on someone more perfectly deserving of the title.

When asked what he hopes to achieve by wearing skirts in his everyday life, Jaden responded:
“You just have to believe in yourself, you know. The world is going to keep bashing me for whatever I do, and I’m going to keep not caring. I’m going to keep doing the same things — I’m going to keep doing more things. I’m going to take most of the blows for my fellow MSFTS. So, you know, in five years when a kid goes to school wearing a skirt, he won’t get beat up and kids won’t get mad at him. It just doesn’t matter. I’m taking the brunt of it so that later on, my kids and the next generations of kids will all think that certain things are normal that weren’t expected before my time.”
It’s exciting to see a young star so firm in his convictions and willing to boldly face society’s preconceptions about masculinity, opening up doors for all those kids who want to dress exactly as they feel.
