Jack Thorne, David Farr, Kelly Marcel Join Writing Team On ‘Electric Dreams: The World Of Philip K Dick’ – Edinburgh
Channel 4 and Sony Pictures Television have enlisted a host of hot UK and U.S. writing talent for their upcoming 10-part anthology Electric Dreams: The World Of Philip K Dick. Each episode of the series will act as a standalone drama, and be adapted and modernized for global audiences from Dick’s distinctive short stories. The five new writers added to the series are Harry Potter And The Cursed Child‘s Jack Thorne; The Night Manager‘s David Farr; Fifty Shades Of Grey‘s Kelly Marcel; The Young Pope‘s Tony Grisoni; and Doctor Who‘s Matthew Graham.
The new group joins writers and exec producers Ronald D Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) and Michael Dinner (Justified, Masters Of Sex). As previously announced, Bryan Cranston will appear in the series and executive produce. There will be more writers added.
Thorne is currently winning huzzahs for his work on the new Harry Potter play, and is adapting Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials for BBC One. Farr, who has an Emmy nomination for The Night Manager, also penned The Weinstein Co’s upcoming war thriller HHhH. Marcel, who adapted EL James’ phenomenon Fifty Shades and penned Tom Hanks-starrer Saving Mr Banks, is writing Disney’s 101 Dalmatians spinoff Cruella. Grisoni’s credits include Sky/HBO’s upcoming The Young Pope, directed by Paolo Sorrentino, which has its world premiere in Venice next month. He’s also reteamed with Terry Gilliam on The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Graham is a TV vet whose credits outside Doctor Who include Life On Mars and the BBC’s Redwater.
Production on Electric Dreams is expected to begin early next year. Channel 4 will air the series in the UK with Sony Pictures Television handling international distribution.
Dick, who died in 1982, had 44 novels published and wrote over 100 short stories. He’s best known for such works as The Man In The High Castle, which has been adapted as a series at Amazon; and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the source material for Blade Runner. Other movies to have been made based on Dick’s books include Total Recall and Minority Report.
Electric Dreams will be exec produced by Moore and Maril Davis via Tall Ship Productions; Dinner under the Rooney McP Productions banner; Cranston and James Degus (Moonshot Entertainment); Isa Dick Hackett, Kalen Egan and Christopher Tricarico (Electric Shepherd Productions); and David Kanter and Matt DeRoss (Anonymous Content).
