'It: Chapter Two' director Andy Muschietti tackling DC's 'The Flash' next
Argentinian director Andy Muschietti has confirmed rumours that he’s directing DC’s long-gestating The Flash movie next.
The director of IT and IT: Chapter Two (in cinemas 6 September) affirmed the recent reports linking him to the film with a simple “yup” when put on the spot by Fandango.
The filmmaker, who has only directed horror films so far in his career following the IT movies and 2013’s Mama, says his superhero debut would be more of a “human drama” than something within the genre with which he’s made his name.
Fandango asked Muschietti whether The Flash would contain horror elements.
“An element of horror? I don’t think so,” Muschietti responded. “What captivated me about the Flash is the human drama in it. The human feelings and emotions that play in the drama [of it]. It’s going to be fun, too. I can’t promise that there will be any horror [elements in it], really, but it’s a beautiful human story.”
With IT and IT: Chapter Two, Muschietti has proved himself as incredibly able director of drama. The human story of The Losers Club, who bond as youngsters to tackle Pennywise before reuniting 27 years later to finish him off in the sequel, is the beating heart of both films, grounding the fantastical horror elements in reality, and elevating the suspense to unbearable levels.

Whether Ezra Miller will return as the super speedy Barry Allen, the character first introduced in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, remains to be seen.
The project has been stuck in development hell for a number of years now and has seen many directors and creatives attached to the project before departing and being replaced with a new name.
2013 - Green Lantern co-writer Greg Berlanti hired to develop the film for release in 2016.
2015 - The LEGO Movie creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller write a story treatment for the film.
2016 - The Lego Batman Movie writer Seth Grahame-Smith leaves the project as director citing ‘creative differences’.
2016 - His replacement Dope director Rick Famuyiwa also quits the project, delaying the film.
2017 - The film is now Flashpoint, inspired by the comic book run of the same name following a number of rewrites.
2019 - Star Ezra Miller teams with DC Comics writer Grant Morrison to write a rival script.
2019 - Director Andy Muschietti and writer Christina Hodson (Bumblebee/Birds of Prey) linked with the film which is reportedly aiming to start prep in 2020.
With Ezra Miller and Grant Morrison’s rival script seemingly dead in the water and the future of the Justice League team introduced in the 2017 team in doubt (Ben Affleck is out, Henry Cavill possibly too), there’s a chance the film could be a complete character reboot.
