Is Night Manager's Susanne Bier Being Lined Up As First Female Bond Director?

Adding another dimension to the rumours swirling around the future of the Bond series, it’s been reported that production company Eon may be lining up its first ever female director.

According to the Radio Times, Susanne Bier, the Danish director who helmed hit BBC spy drama ‘The Night Manager’, is on the shortlist.

Sources close to Eon and producer Barbara Broccoli are said to have Bier among a 'handful’ of other names to takeover from Sam Mendes, who successfully brought home both 'Skyfall’ and 'Spectre’ for the franchise.

Mendes has ruled out of another movie last week, saying: “It was an incredible adventure, I loved every second of it. But I think it’s time for somebody else.”

The rumours may, of course, have more than a little to do with the fact that Tom Hiddleston, who starred in 'The Night Manager’, is said to be in line to take over from Daniel Craig as 007.

Some bookmakers even suspended betting last month after a series of high value bets were placed on the 'Thor’ star to be next in line.

It was also reported that Hiddleston had met with Broccoli and Sam Mendes too in London, but for his part, he has said he’s not in the running.

“The thing is the position isn’t vacant as far as I am aware. No one has talked to me about it,” he told Graham Norton.

Further reports suggested that Craig had walked away from the role last month too, despite having been offered a reported £68 million in salary and endorsement deals to make two more Bond movies.

Craig has signed up to appear in the ambitious and potentially long-running new TV series 'Purity’ for the Showtime network, which appeared to support rumours he was walking away.

However, it’s also said that he’s actually contracted to make another Bond movie, which would be the historic 25th in the series.
