Vintage wedding dress

Lace, lace, lace, and more lace! This is the fabric of choice for your wedding gown, with silk being a close second. If you have set a bigger portion of your budget aside for your wedding dress then you may want to splurge on an authentic vintage dress. However, the vintage style has influenced so many present day designs too, so you won’t be short of choice. Relaxed boat necks as well as a V-neck (both front and back) are classic vintage dress features, as are silk sashes tied into a bow at the back of the dress (with long sashes left to hang). Skirt shapes tend to be column and floor length with a sweep train that pools on the floor. Cap, cape or long lace sleeves (a la Kate Middleton) will fit it in with this look too.

Vintage props and decorations

Had you thought about carrying a feather hand fan on your wedding day instead of a bouquet? Or how about a delicate lace parasol to give your wedding photos an edge? To decorate the venue, hang lace lanterns draped in beads, fill rustic birdcages with blooms and scatter ornate picture frames on tables filled with black and white photographs from your grandparents’ youth. If you’re lucky enough to have chandeliers at your venue then they will tie in marvelously, but if you’re not so lucky, then buy some chandelier table lamps instead to have as your centrepieces – you could keep one or two and give the rest to your closest relatives to have in their home after the wedding.

Vintage wedding accessories

Delicate lace wrist gloves will send you straight back to the 1920s and a mantilla veil with its delicate lace trim is perfect for the vintage look too. Or, you could opt for a veil with a Juliet cap which both Kate Moss and Lily Allen wore on their wedding days. To head toward the flapper, art deco vibe you need to bling up your look with long pendant necklaces, a pearl and feather headpiece or glittering beaded details on your dress. For your reception, swap your bouquet for a lace box clutch and add some evening sparkle with chic diamante and pearl hair comb.

Vintage wedding hair and beauty

If you’re not used to wearing your hair down, or if your hair is short, then this era is ideal for you. Vintage-inspired brides favour tousled chignons, waved up-dos and neat crops. The detail or wow-factor often comes from the veil or hair accessories instead. Your hair and beauty icons should be Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller – both English roses who work the vintage look so effortlessly. Smoky eyes and a strong lip shade work well, and make sure you add a soft blush to your cheeks.

Vintage colour scheme

Steer away from bright, bold colours for your vintage wedding as it’s all about being subtle and delicate. Introduce hints of duck egg blue, peach, blush, soft pink, nude and sage green to accompany your mainly ivory or neutral scheme. Here are some subtle ways to incorporate colour into vintage wedding: Ribbon on your wedding invitations; place settings and napkins; icing details or cake decorations on your wedding cake; wedding bouquet; sashes around the bridesmaids’ dresses; tea-light holders scattered on the tables; sashes or bows around the chairs, and favour boxes or pouches.

Vintage flowers and bouquets

Roses are the ultimate vintage flowers and luckily they come in so many varieties – over 100 in fact. For the perfect vintage bouquet, choose soft pink blooms to create a blousy look using peonies, hydrangeas and roses such as amnesia, vendella and memory lane. You could give your bouquet an art deco edge with some ostrich feathers and sparkling brooches or pearls, or have a floral pomander instead. Read more on
