Infographic: The Varying Degrees of a Hollywood Divorce

Divorce in Hollywood is never easy, but some celebrity exes know how to do it better than others.

Our divorce matrix (below) takes a look at how some of the biggest couples in the biz initially handled their breakups and how they relate (or don’t) to one another today.

Take, for instance, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. They’ve both been on their first post-split press tour and have been vocal — and in unison — about how they are on good terms and are making their new situation work for the sake of their three children. That’s impressive, considering their split was pretty ugly at the beginning. (Nannygate, anyone?) However, not everyone has gone from checking into the “heartbreak hotel” to “keeping it classy,” as there are a few ways to deal with a breakup in the public eye.

On one end of the spectrum, you’ve got Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, who seem to have set the bar for consciously uncoupling while following their vow to co-parent their two kids and remain friends. They join the ranks of Courteney Cox and David Arquette, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, and Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, who seem to have figured out the whole high-profile divorce thing.

Then you’ve got the Eddie Cibrian and Brandi Glanville types who went through a nasty divorce and are still struggling to figure out way to coexist peacefully — mainly due to the fact that LeAnn Rimes, “the other woman” who broke up their marriage, is now his wife. That’s one step above Glanville’s former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills co-star Camille Grammer, who says co-parenting isn’t even an option for her and her ex-husband, Kelsey. The Frasier actor refuses to talk to her six years after divorcing. These splits definitely fall in the “heartbreak hotel” and “public enemies” quadrant.

Perhaps one of the least likely ways to go about divorcing is to split somewhat drama free (we’ll still call it “conscious uncoupling”), only to become public enemies years later. This is Madonna’s reality as she is currently locked in a bitter custody battle with ex-husband Guy Ritchie eight years after calling it quits. Ironically, she and her first husband, Sean Penn, are chummier than ever.
