Indiana Jones Could Get His Own Cross-Platform Universe

‘Indiana Jones 5’ could be just the beginning…

According to Slashfilm, ILM President Lynwen Brennan discussed the possibility of cross-platform media during Star Wars Celebration Europe… and casually dropped ‘Indiana Jones’ into the equation.

“Kiri [Hart] and her group have mapped out a story and timeline across multiple platforms many years in advance, many EXHAUSTING years in advance,” she said. “We have a great honour to have responsibility for, so we want to be really careful with that. Not only for Star Wars but with Indiana Jones, which we’re all really excited about as well.”

Of course, this reveals that the Lucasfilm Story Group is not only working on ‘Star Wars’ but also the ‘Indiana Jones’ series, too. And it sounds as though we may see some cross-platform ‘Indiana Jones’ storytelling in the near future.

But what does that mean?

It’s no secret that the ‘Star Wars’ franchise is branching out with the introduction of the ‘Star Wars’ stand-alone films, such as ‘Rogue One’. But I can’t help thinking that’s unlikely when it comes to ‘Indiana Jones’.

Sure, they could introduce stand-alone films based around Henry Jones Sr. or even Mutt.

But would anyone want to see them?

Instead, it seems more likely that ‘Indiana Jones’ would benefit from cross-platform media such as new books, comic books or even video games. But as Peter Sciretta points out, the real draw here would be with ILMxLab Virtual Reality experiences.

“I’m most excited about what ILMxLab might do with the character, not just for virtual reality experiences that put you in the middle of the adventure (imagine being put inside a booby-trapped temple) but experimental storytelling beyond our current expectations.”

Of course, ILMxLab is already working on a Darth Vader VR movie… and an ‘Indiana Jones’ experience could well be the next step.

I mean, how awesome would that be?

Will it happen? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

But ‘Indiana Jones’ in VR sounds like an absolute blast.
