At some point, it always felt inevitable that Nic Cage would make a spiritual follow-up to 2002's Adaptation: the trippy, Charlie Kaufman-written epic that saw the actor go from contemplating muffin consumption to adventuring through the annals of Florida. Last year, we sort of had that film—The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, where Nic Cage played Nic Cage, but it wasn't quite batshit enough to stand alongside Adaptation.
Thankfully, A24 has heard my nightly cries of "not the bees!" to the universe, and will deliver the Cage-ian masterpiece I've been waiting for: Dream Scenario. The studio just dropped the first trailer for the film, which will star Cage as a college professor who suddenly appears in the dreams of strangers, Freddy Kreuger-style. You can view the trailer above, which shows the actor cameoing in apocalyptic, bloody, and erotic (?!) dreams, while his students make memes about him. Check out A24's plot description:
Hapless family man Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage) finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. But when his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom, in this wickedly entertaining comedy from writer-director Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself) and producer Ari Aster.
Of course, the hilarity of Living Meme Nic Cage appearing in a film where his character goes wildly viral isn't lost on the actor. "Well, in the name of Thespis, it was no acting please,”" Cage told Deadline about the role. "I might have been the first actor who woke up one morning and somebody put a montage of me having meltdown moments and freaking out... I think it was called 'Nicolas Cage Loses His Shit.'"
Ah, "Nic Cage Loses His Shit!" One of my favorites. Give it a rewatch to tide yourself over until Dream Scenario's theatrical release on November 10, 2023.
